Which it is, until you scroll down the page and see so many "f" you, this and thats and I just cannot comprehend such bitter hatred over so goofy a thing. Don't think the stories are average enough, vote them off and down. Post something more average. Fake stories? They happen. Vote meh. Don't agree with the permutation of this particular meme site? That's the internet. It morphs, changes. When people get bored of the same themes, it will change again.

I'd argue it is actually more amusing that MLIA is a bit pie-in-the-sky. We want to believe... in people.

And by the looks of all those nested swearing comments from the LoL sites to any news site, we need to be convinced.

One of the TW:COE promos presented me with this reviewer's quote: "What the X-Files should have been..."

This caught my attention and left me wanting to defend the old fandom, until I saw the end of TW tonight.

Whoever that was, was right. Though it is not solely the fault of XF S8/9.

However crazy RTD can be, however big some of his plot holes--he is damn smart. Socially. Politically. Creatively. He understands the art and the power of writing and uses it in ways I just boggle over.

Maybe it is just that I am older, since I still think of XF as my childhood show. I remember good stories and creepy details pulled out of history--the WWII transports of "merchandise" for one. I knew that a lot of the tone was coming out of CC's generation who lived through the Kennedy assassination and Watergate and yet it sort of encouraged "Trust No One" in those of us GenX/Y/Mill growing up in the relatively peaceful 1990s.

But getting all the way through TW this week I don't think I've ever been so struck with horrible questions and the desire for hope. Even as I hated the conspiring inner circle, there was no escaping the reality they were presented with, no denying the mechanisms of politics and rationalization. It was all too real.

Even in the parallels I could name to the XF arc--secret groups negotiating deals and projects with the aliens, sacrificed family members and children to possibly terrible ends, a few discredited defenders against them... it felt completely different. With XF everything was in the shadows, the Project a legacy of dying members pulling strings in government or the FBI while outside of it all. Even M&S's growing fight against it somehow wasn't as broad in scope--it wasn't out on the streets. And with the way S9 ended, there wasn't a strong affirmation that they could still fight invasion, two alone against the end of the world. Post 9/11 disillusionment or not, it was a lonely fight that was becoming unreal. I think the myth got too big while the character base got too small and undefined--hiding M&S&William away only broke down trust and perspective.

I know that TW's existence today can tip its hat to XF in the 1990's, but I am intrigued that TW seems to have inherited the arcing plot but not the path. With COE, the inner circle making terrible judgments and choices is not a drifting shadow group--it is us and our public figures. Even new characters have names and family and complicated interests apparent in dialogue and action. There is panic and defiance in members of the public when doors are forced. Those fighting against it all do suffer despair and death. It is down to Earth even with an immortal man as a lead and unexplained alien science. It is the suspicion of power made real by betrayals in the few places that matter, not a web of conspirators. It is frightening, it is uncomfortable. You mourn and you hope against the images on screen not just for the characters in the story, but for life itself in the world.

It is an end for Torchwood, for sure, it came full circle and proved its characters. We'll just have to see.

With any luck, this is the start of bringing this journal back to life. Looking back over the old entries I hope that my prose has matured but that the wide-eyed dreamer still remains.

The Jersey Devil
They’re going to Atlantic City, so Mulder tries to be witty.
Mulder: You feeling lucky, Scully?
Scully: Relative to whom?

Fact: Scully is Vulcan.

The Pilot
[Mulder] stole that hair right off of Conan O’Brien.

Upon examining the corpse, Scully says it’s not human. Mulder looks pleased with that conclusion. Scully speculates that it is a chimpanzee or something from the ape family.

Scully: Possibly an orangutan.
Unspoken: NOT A DAMN ALIEN.

Driving down the road and — oh crap, bright light, Mulder and Scully cover their eyes! Fade to white! And the car’s engine dies and it rolls to a stop — at the spot where Mulder spraypainted that big X before. He checks his watch: 9 minutes just went missing! Mulder is…really happy about this.

This poor, poor journal. A remnant of old fandom days that seem so far away now, created at the bitter end of a lot of things and yet the memory keeps creeping back closer...

Seriously, there's going to be a second XF movie. Due out in late July, and here it is April. Which is still a bit mind boggling as only two months ago it appeared--finally, tangibly--as confirmed and greenlighted for "coming soon." I have long dropped off the XF radar and the forums and only a lack of time and old apprehensions keep me from diving back in now.

Though for those same reasons I've held back on totally immersing myself into DW online communities. It always bothered me that I never seemed to bring XF to a close with all the chaos of S8&9 and 2001-2003. The fandom itself remained in limbo and debate years beyond the end. And then as I started to change, as sharing the experience of whatever genre shifted from virtual to real life, secretive to out-loud, I just let the past go quietly. The frantic focus calmed.

Breathe. Start again.

And eventually in a new year: a new fandom, new excitement, new joy. A little older, a little wiser, and with an open heart and mind and a willingness to laugh at myself in it. : )

So now, with a mind wandering between memory and a different perspective, it is a little strange--but also intriguing.

Every new thing I read or see plays out twice--what did it mean then, what could it mean now? In the photos off IMDB, I immediately recognize the old look, the posing, (the trenchcoats!) but I also see the difference of time, from faces to computer to office, in small details that bring it to date, and back alive. And that is what is exciting, what I hope for, even as I seem so far away from the old.

A few thoughts, after too long...

It's a crazy little world we live in that we should have to say goodbye before we can even say hello.

How strange and wonderful that while we may be born in the same city, we will never meet until we are separated by hundreds of miles, and happen to wander into the same forum.

All the same, I wish that when it was needed most I could have offered a smile, a card, a funny memory from the years and discussions now long past. I wish I could have been as good a friend in return as Glow always was to all of us. Such wonderful and encouraging spirits are rare, and I am glad to have met her and shared a laugh with her, if only too briefly.

I hope that the beauty and love Glow brought into our lives will inspire more of the same.

~x~x~x~x~x~x~x~x~x~x~x~

Also, I was going through my old scrapbooks and found this, as part of a group poem we had been working on in S8:
Glow: I said my goodbyes, went, and was all alone...

Never alone, Glow, never alone....

Wow, 5.19.03...
One year ago we were all sitting in front of our tvs and saying goodbye.
And just now (10:13) it was beginning to sink in.

For better for worse, The Truth has been revealed, and here we are. *sigh*

Heh, I caught Squeeze today after not seeing it in forever... And something in the way Mulder asks "Do you think I'm spooky" almost gave me goosebumps and made me burst out laughing at the same time. Heh.

Okie, fun post question thingy with a little nostalgia mixed in #5:
What is your favorite XF, X-Phile memory out of everything?
memysza: (Default)
I'll agree with Fire. 66.6% my arse. (70.6% time two.) I'm slipping lately, but not that much.

For my own amusement, IMHOs:
(From The Test)

1. Do you need a good imagination to enjoy the X-Files?
Let's see. Considering it's tv, I'd say you don't have to, but from my experience and according to N.E. Genge, we Philes are of decent intelligence, so I'll say it couldn't hurt. And if you're going to get into all the mytharc, you *need* a decent noggin on you.

2. Are the X-Files based on real FBI files?
No. Not unless some of the eps have elements of actual high profile cases, which I'm not aware that any really overtly do.

3. Can any of Mulder's superiors be trusted?
Define superiors. I believe that Skinner could hold confidence, and even Kersh (hissssss...) helped them out in the end. But CSM was also supposed to hold a position in the higher ups, and Blevins certainly was not to be trusted.

4. Can the 'X-Files' be trusted?
Trust no one.
Though I still wonder if this question is asking about the actual files, the XF division or the people on the XF. Or heck, maybe it even means the show itself.

5. Did Deep Throat (DT) work for the CIA during Vietnam?
Between Fire and I, we think DT was CIA, and the Vietnam reference is from Musings' E.B.E flashback... As to whether both coincide or if CSM's musings can be trusted...

6. Does DT work for an illegal, covert organization?
I'd call the Syndicate a covert organization, and they don't seem to exist in a place of laws.

7. Is DT's organization above the law?
See above.

8. Is there a directive that demands the termination of any aliens encountered?
Yes, it was between a number of foreign govts and the US. See E.B.E/Musings.

9. As touched upon in 'Anasazi' did the Navajo Native Americans have an active relationship with aliens?
Fire: There was the connection of the language/writing
(me: which totally didn't work on-screen--ancient native american/alien symbols translating directly into english letters... ha! esp if the original fragment had to be translated by a Navajo speaker...)
[Come to think about it, though I don't know Navajo or Anasazi history specifically, most North American cultures were oral cultures... how'd they have an ancient writing system? Designs and symbols yes, full writing, rarely.]
At any rate, see TSE/AF then, if that's enough.

10. Did humanity come into existence because of alien intervention?
See below for one take.

11. In 'The End' Mulder and Scully come across Gibson Praise who can read minds--but is he part alien?
See The Beginning and the 'junk DNA' comments at the end. "It would mean we all are."

12. Is Krycek indeed a Russian double agent?
Well, he's self interested that's for sure. Double agent is debatable.

13. Was 'X' working with 'CSM'?
Yes, though he was also aiding Mulder at the same time.

14. Did Mrs. Mulder have an affair with CSM?
If we are to believe 'William' and that Mulder is not his father's son, yeah.

15. If aliens have been on earth for 'millions of years' does the planet belong to them more than humanity?
Just because we're outnumbered by insects, does it mean we have less right to life on this planet?

16. Have aliens in the X-Files been connected to humans on a religious level?
Yes. See any and all bibilical references, see Biogenesis/TSE/AF, see Krycek's comments about God and Scully's child in Essence, see even darn Roadrunners.

17. Does Mulder have an alien virus in him?
See Tunguska/Terma. And you could argue the same for his abduction in S7/8.

18. Is Scully an alien hybrid?
Unless her exposure to both the virus and the vaccine really messed with her biology, not to my knowledge.

19. Do you think the Syndicate is responsible for the creation of alien-human hybrids?
Wasn't that part of the Plan originally, to aid the colonists?

20. Is there a cover up involving Scully and the government stemming from her childhood?
I read a fanfic once... But not to our canon knowledge.

21. If the government kidnapped Samantha, were they working with aliens at the time?
If the Project really was to create alien-human hybrids (and later clones), then they had to be. Besides, Roswell was 1947, Sam was born in 1964. They were already here.

22. In the Pilot do Mulder and Scully pass out for 9 minutes?
They *lose* those famous nine minutes, but as to what actually happened during that time...anyone's guess. Unless you want me to dig up old fics...

23. When Scully's back is covered in red marks in the Pilot, has she contracted a mysterious disease?
No. a) they're mosquito bites, b) she only mistakes them for "the Marks"

24. In 'The Ghost in the Machine' is the ghost a reference to Descartes' Dualist philosophy with the ghost in the maching being a mind that does not need a body?
This sounds familiar, but as I'm not wholy versed on Descartes, I don't know. I would guess in the affirmative.

25. Do you think that the Defen[s]e Department is closer than we have been lead to believe to creating artificial intelligence adaptive networks, like in 'Ghost in the Machine?'
On our knowledge of the last 10 years or the last 2? I wouldn't put it past them, but I honestly don't know what the DOD has been actually doing, or is saying they're doing. Terrorism has become more of an issue lately than artificial intelligence systems which havan't appeared technicologically yet. I dunno about you, but my laptop is pretty non-intelligent...

26. Do you believe that humans have been cloned secretly like in 'Eve?'
Personally? No. But with the rate cloning is going...
Whatever happened to that "baby girl" that company supposedly made anyway?

27. Could you be a clone?
As the technology hasn't come to exact fruit yet even now, and I'm nearly 20, I'd say no. Not unless there really is a huge multinational-intergalactic conspiracy that all centers on my very being. ; )

28. Are the events in 'The Erlenmeyer Flask' based on truth?
Fire: the very beginning, the toxic blood is based on a true story
(Note: Yes, a dying woman in CA whose blood and body gave off something that made the nurses and doctors seriously ill, with effects lasting to the present day. They still don't know what happened.)
The rest... probably not.

29. Can 'Little Green Men' be taken as conclusive proof of aliens for Mulder and Scully?
We didn't see the aliens... And is there such a thing as conclusive proof for M&S? And is "conclusive" directed at their personal beliefs or their ability to prove any of this?

30. Is 'Flukeman' in Season 2 a mutant reptile?
I believe a fluke isn't a reptitle...more related to a tapeworm.

31. Is 'The Host' really a warning about the future of nuclear power?
The future or the past? (What is this, a 1960's anti-nuke question?) But I'd say it has some real concerns to it.

32. Do you think that the worker in the chicken factory in 'Our Town' contracts CJD because she is a cannibal?
The storyline seemed to suggest that. And it came up in another ep I can't remember right now.

33. Has Mulder ever been in love?
Of course. Even if you don't enter into the shippy arguement, you'd have to think at some point he did.

34. Did Mulder study at Oxford?
"He's an Oxford educated psychologist..." (Pilot) And that's canon even if the writers forget it.

35. Does the Syndicate ultimately dissolve because of forces beyond their control?
I'd say getting fried to a crisp was pretty beyond their control, unless you want to argue that their dealing with the aliens brought about their demise (as Mulder surmised in One Son).

36. Mulder's sister becomes an alien hybrid. Has she always been one?
First, we don't know that the tests were successful. Second, the only "success" appears to be Cassandra Spender and who knows what happened to all the other family members and children the Syndicate "gave up." Third, if she always was one, then there was a lot of serious modern genetic engineering going on that had to involve Mrs. Mulder back in the 1960s. She's been spacy, but not that spacy to ignore such. And by that arguement, Mulder could be one too.

37. In her heart does Scully believe in the paranormal and extra terrestrials?
By S8/9, probably most of it. But back in S1...no way. Define time please. That and this question really involves us having to put words in her mouth.

38. Is it in Season 2 that Scully disappears for the first time and consequently finds herself in a coma?
I can't think of any other disappearances and comas in S1, so yeah. Eps 2X06-7 and 2X08, Ascension-One Breath arc.

39. Is the black oil that we first encounter in 'Piper Maru' a metaphor for blood?
I thought the black oil was the medium for the alien virus, which seems to be the active component of alien life as we've seen it. By that description, it's more a *body* than blood. And why exactly would it be a metaphor for blood? Simply because it looked like it?
[added: Humm, though in FTF the alien "blood" really was the black oil... But why consider this a metaphor? In Piper Maru as far as we knew, the oil was simply another alien type.]

40. Was Samantha's abduction intentional?
Yes. Each of the Syndicate members had to give up family members as collateral and for the potential of saving them through genetic hybridization. See the WMM's explanation to Mulder in the novelization of FTF and the events of PX/TRATB.

41. In 'Anasazi' are alien corpses found?
Arguably, the bodies in the boxcar were human (though experimentally modified) because they all bore smallpox scars. To my knowledge the aliens don't need such vaccination, and IMO their every being has to be somewhat similar if bees can transmit both smallpox and the alien virus as we see in Zero Sum/FTF.

42. Are the bees which appeaar in 'Herrenvolk,' 'Zero Sum' and [FTF] carrying plague?
(42!!) Well, they're carrying something. I'd say the alien virus is a plague. ("The plague to end all plagues...") Though if this is like an anal True/False question, technicaly Zero Sum had them carrying smallpox and we were never told what the Herrenvolk bees had.

43. Is the vicious alien that gestates in someone's torso in 'The Beginning' the same as the familiar Gray alien?
In my viewings, there seem to be even two types of greys. Those more peacible (Unnatural, etc) and those which rip and tear (FTF, The Beginning), though I guess the idea was that the gray goes through a number of metamorphasis (sp?) ... It could be possible. I'm not overly convinced though.

44. Is 'Purity Control' the name of the hybridization project?
As neither Fire nor I can remember enough specifics of Erlenmeyer Flask, we leave that up to debate. However, as hybridization was one of the main focuses of The Project, I'd say that falls under that title, and Purity Control only the tag for the genetic matieral in the flask--the untampered alien material.

45. Do the events shown in flashback in 'Per Manum' take place after 'Biogenesis?'
First, as the only ep to get timestamped from mid S7-S9 is Redrum, nobody can really know. Second, Per Manum seems to fit in different places even in S7 time. Third... I honestly think that Scully could only ask what she did after certain events and personal realizations of S7 occured. Though if PM really did occur much earlier than we originally thought, it'd be intersting to conisder. But I've never heard that idea brought up any discussion ever.

46. Does Scully ask Mulder to help her conceive a child through IVF?
Yes. See Per Manum.

47. After it is confirmed that Billy Miles is not dead, is he still human?
Depends on your POV. He literally shed his skin and took on all the characteristics and mindset of a human-replicant, which seem to be all metal and some flesh. I'd argue not.

48. When Scully becomes pregnant in Season 7, is it Mulder's?
(Okay, I have *so* many problems with this question.)
One: We still don't know how the heck Scully even got pregnant, much less how that was even possible when she wasn't supposed to be able to even have children. Two: S7&8&9 did nothing to put forward one possible answer over the other. Three: Even IVF, if it worked, doesn't necessarily mean that either of them are the biological parents, especially if there were ulterior motives for William's being. Four: The "natural" argument would pretty much have to be, though that's yet to be proven even where that might have occured in S7 (there's a couple of timeframes), much less if it really did. Five: From Essence, even Mulder doesn't seem to surely know. Six: There was absolutely nothing in NIHT:II that substantiates that William was "created"--Scully never found her or her baby's name on that ship--again leaving us out of the loop again to say how and who. Seven: In conclusion, as we never were told how William came to be, we can't confirm or deny Mulder's part.

And eight: If you want to be like me, I always argued that even if William wasn't biologically theirs, it didn't really matter. And by The Truth, he sure as hell was still "their son," all things considered.

49. The alien replicants appear to want to kill Scully's child but when given the chance, do they?
No, they just stare creepily. See Existence. It was the UFO cult that wanted William, though all the motives and characters of S9 are just *screwed* IMHO.

50. Does Scully have a child before her pregnancy in Season 7?
Not physically, but biologically: Emily Sims. See CC/Emily S4.

51. Are alien implants placed in the head of abductees?
Implants are found at the base of the neck or in the nasal cavity. I would say so.
(They can also be found elsewhere in the body, but the head/neck seems key.)

52. In [TRATB] does the alien bounty hunter try to dispose of an alien rebel because he is working for the Syndicate?
I can't remember... and the politics of TRATB were all messed up. And there were too many aliens.

53. Was Mulder's father part of the Syndicate?
He was part of The Project, and CSM and WMM mention him making deicisions, so I'd think so.

54. Does Mulder finally find Samantha alive?
Find yes. Alive, no. See Closure. (and I'll have to make a side note about some things later)

55. Do shapeshifting aliens have purple blood?
It's greeeeeeeeeeeeen.

56. Are the faceless aliens and the shapeshifting aliens one and the same?
They seem to be of the same kind, though argh, the faceless aliens were rebels who had disfigured themselves so as to not be succeptable to the virus, and many of the shapeshifting aliens are the grey's (as the Unnatural seems to suggest), which would make them two different alien types. ARRRRRRRGH.

57. In 'Three of a Kind' does Suzanne Modeski know she is aiding a project which aims to eliminate a person's free will?
I'm having problems remembering the exact differences between Unusual Suspects and Three of a Kind...as in the first ep she initially didn't know, but the second ep she had some idea (just not a full one). Ask me later.

58. Although mysterious, are the walk-in spirits helpful?
They led Mulder to his sister...that's pretty helpful.

59. Does Mulder ever tell Scully he loves her?
In chorus now: TRIANGLE! At least blatantly (and drugged).
Arguably they've both said it in more real ways in a hundred other moments. ; )

60. Does Mulder's mother die?
Not only does she die, she visits as a ghost. See SUZ/Closure. S7.

61. In 'Empedoc[l]es' does Reyes have a vision involving Scully's future?
As I can't remember Empedocles (which the site spelled wrong) at this very moment, I'll leave this one blank right now.

62. Is the Syndicate importing nanotechnology into the United States?
See SR819 and debate where Krycek got the technology. I don't know.

63. Scully has her ova removed when she is abducted, so is her pregnancy down to divine intervention?
One: Mulder stole back a vial of them back in Memento Mori, even if I have serious qualms about the probability of Per Manum's ideas for it via IVF. Two: We have no idea what actually constituted the 'inability to have children' so we don't know the probability of that whole biological system working or not. Three: There is that idea of CSM and En Ami and a "fix" for whatever was wrong. Four: Per Manum--*IF* anything worked in that ep, scientifically or "naturally" as many have conjectured. Five: Divine intervention named Chris Carter...
(Okay, I guess it is possible, as the cancer cure had a similar option but still..)

64. Is Cassandra Spender the first successful alien hybrid?
As far as we're told, yes. See TF/OS.

65. Do the Colonists achieve their slave race by mutating abductees?
Well, the replicants were certainly achieved by mutating abductees, but it's not entirely clear (to me at least) which alien race was creating them. The original idea was to create hybrids who could survive the virus, which then logically seems to mean subserviance to the alien race...

66. Do alien-human hybrids resemble Gray aliens more than they do [the] faceless?
What? How? The hybrids look *human* so they can blend in. The faceless rebels look human-ish. On that I would say no, but with this test....

67. Although the Syndicate seems to be working towards hybridization, are there ulterior motives at play?
Yes, the vaccine.

68. Would a vaccine against the black oil save humanity?
Would it save our health and bodies and minds? Yes.
Would we then still prevail over the aliens in a physical battle afterwards? Your guess is as good as mine.

69. Is Emily a genetic creation?
She truly seemed to be.

70. Did the Syndicate provide a safe haven for Nazi scientists after World War II?
Yes. See Paper Clip.

71. Does Scully manage to explain the phenomena she enounters more often than not?
I'd say she does. Even if it wasn't exactly right, she believed her explanations.

72. Is Doggett's son murdered?
Yes. See the quick and tidy end to that plotline in Release.

73. In Season 7, is the baton passed from Mulder and Scully to Doggett and Reyes?
The torch is passed... but not in S7. See S8/9.

74. In 'Fallen Angel' does the alien cloaking technology make them invisible?
Yes. Why would the military have had to spend so much time looking for them otherwise?

75. Is the ultimate plan of the Colonists to take over Earth?
Seems to be. "They're only coming back..." (Requiem)

Whoo, I remember more than I thought possible.
Die-hard phile, your name beith Memy...
